  Woman2Woman Business Magazine Article:

Should You Hire an Interior Designer?

Perhaps you want to simply spruce up your office or home and need a few ideas.  If so, decorating magazines are an exellent source.  However, if you are considering new construction, remodeling, space planning, extensive decorating, or a color scheme, you will probably be more satisfied with the results if you are advised by an interior designer.  Professionally trained interior designers have all the skills of a decorator, and many skills of a draftsman/architect and a builder. Their expertise includes custom floor plans, lighting designs, space planning, color schemes, interior construction, accessibility for disabled persons, and accessories.  They provide unique ideas, unusual styles, and sources that you may not be aware of.

A designer can help you focus on priorities and develop your ideas to best suit your current lifestyle and future needs.  Hiring a designer during the planning stage can prevent you from making costly changes or mistakes.  The initial plan should consider the function of the space, traffic flow, comfort, convenience, lighting, mood, materials, safety, and ideas unique to your project.  Along with the designer’s innovative ideas, your personal ideas, needs, lifestyle, preferences, time schedule, budget, and building codes will be incorporated into the plan.  Designers are familiar with environmentally friendly alternatives, energy efficiency, and ergonomics (an applied science of creating efficient designs based on the human body).

Thorough planning will minimize stress, anxiety, delays, and ultimately overspending.  With a limited budget, a designer will suggest the most effective way to spend your money.

Once the planning is finalized, designers will recommend quality tradesmen, assist you in comparing your bids, and give you cost-efficient ideas. They will assist your contractor or sub-contractors to organize what to do, the sequence in which to do it, and where to obtain materials. Designers are aware of new materials and offer unique products sold to-the-trade only.  They will assist in on-the-job observation to assure quality workmanship in a timely manner.  You will find references for skilled tradesmen, quality products, and specialized suppliers from your designer.

A designer will assist you with implementing your decorating ideas and/or offering you other innovative ideas to be considered.  Selecting color schemes, lighting, floor coverings, ceiling treatments, wall coverings, window treatments, fabrics, furnishings, countertops, appliances, and accessories are much easier with a designer’s knowledge of cost, durability, and maintenance of such products.

The innovative ideas, the ease of accomplishment, the time saved, the cost efficiency, and the unique results of your individualized project are well worth the investment of an interior designer.

Long after the process is forgotten,
you will enjoy the space designed especially for your needs and lifestyle.
